If you can't find housing at the post office or just want to live in the area, you may be eligible for Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH). BAH is issued monthly based on class and zip code. It is based on a formula that takes into account the cost of living in the communities surrounding the post as well as the likely age and seniority of the applying soldier. BAH is a great way to keep housing costs down, if you can.

Fort Hood Family Housing Now Open To Everyone
There are a lot of things to consider, living in a state with no income during this time...
While military taxes are generally only applied to base pay that is federally taxed. Some states have income requirements...not interested in the success or failure of a postal residence? Interested in buying instead of leasing? Is your goal to stay at or below your Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH)?
Here are BAH rates for 2018 and my recommended housing budget if you want to stay on target with your BAH budget.
In 2018, Fort Hood saw a slight decrease in BAH for most occupations, especially lone soldiers. This is despite record high annual house price growth rates. I think the army made a mistake and BAH should go to the area in the future.
New Bah Rates!
BAHs are intended to include utilities, and I have considered utility assessments in the above range, estimating utilities at 1.5% of the purchase price per annum. I'm also assuming an annual insurance premium of about 0.8% of the purchase price and a tax rate of 2.47% (roughly Keeling's rate).
Your mortgage payment includes PITI: principal, interest, taxes, and insurance. Your monthly payment goes up or down based on the interest rate. The "interest" above is a rate of 4% to 6%. Interest rates are expected to rise, but as of this writing they are still close to 4%, which means you should be fine with the higher end of these prices. But better play it safe when it comes to budget numbers!
Of course, your budget depends on more than just your BAH. Families with multiple incomes may have larger budgets. Soldiers may be willing to spend more than their BAH for better housing.
Save money over their BAH and even turn their home into an investment. How you spend your money is entirely up to you. Just make sure you take precautions, use your VA loans wisely, and avoid becoming poor.

Remember to budget your monthly payments first, not your prices. Your payment is what you have to pay. Related prices may change based on interest rates and other variables.

Steps 1 and 2 are talking to a lender and finding a real estate agent. If you're moving to the area, I recommend doing both of these things now. I am a local Realtor and Veteran who received PCS four times while in the military and purchased 5 homes in 5 years (2 with VA loans and 3 with FHA.
