Ruger 480 Alaskan - Today we'll be reviewing the Ruger Super Redhawk, similar to the one here at Cabela's.
Ruger is known for making incredibly durable and tank-like revolvers that are essentially designed to fire an unlimited number of full-power Magnum rounds.

The Ruger Super Redhawk is no exception. Holds some larger handgun cartridges such as the .41 Magnum. .44 Magnum, .454 Casull and .480 Ruger to name a few, the Super Redhawk is an example of a strong Magnum revolver that can be used for hunting and defense against large and dangerous game.

If you're looking for a large Magnum revolver to take out into the woods, the Ruger Super Redhawk is definitely the way to go. Let's talk more about this behemoth of a revolver and what it has to offer:
The Super Redhawk was designed as an evolution of the earlier Ruger .44 Magnum revolver known simply as the Redhawk.
First introduced in 1980, the Redhawk was Ruger's first double-action Magnum revolver and was essentially an improved version of Ruger's Security Six and Service Six series of revolvers chambered in .357 Magnum and .38 Special for cartridges.
Before that, Ruger produced a single-action Magnum revolver in the form of the Blackhawk, which is essentially a bigger and stronger version of the Colt Single Action Weapon (also known as the Peacemaker). The Blackhawk sold very well, but Smith & Wesson still dominated the Magnum market with their Model 29 and 629 revolvers.

As a result, Ruger decided to compete directly with Smith & Wesson by developing its own double-action/single-action Magnum revolver, and the result was the Redhawk. Like the Security Six and Service Six revolvers, the Redhawk had a one-piece frame for added durability (in contrast, most double-action revolvers had a removable side plate).
Marketed exclusively to handgun hunters, the Redhawk was available in a variety of barrel lengths with blued or stainless steel finishes and was a huge success for Ruger. In addition to being more durable, the Redhawk was less expensive than the Smith & Wesson 29, so those who wanted a brand new .44 Magnum revolver but couldn't afford a Smith had a Ruger.
However, within a few years, Ruger decided to update its entire line of revolvers. The security and six-duty revolvers were phased out in favor of the GP100, which was even more powerful and designed to fire an unlimited number of full-power .357 Magnum rounds.
Ruger also developed an update to its Redhawk revolver, and in 1987 the the Ruger Super Redhawk was introduced. Just as the Redhawk was based on the Security Six revolver, the Super Redhawk was based on the GP100 revolver.

Today, Ruger sells both the Redhawk and Super Redhawk revolvers, along with the GP100 (although the Security Six and Service Six revolvers are discontinued).
The main difference between the Redhawk and the Super Redhawk is that the Super Redhawk has a longer frame and cylinder collar, which means that the Super Redhawk has a lot more steel in the top bar and around the exhaust rod, and that it has enough great add volume. .
This extra steel in the Super Redhawk is noticeable when you look at it next to the original Redhawk, and it was a big selling point for Ruger when selling the gun.
The Super Redhawk comes in 2.5-inch, 7.5-inch, and 9.5-inch barrel lengths. All Super Redhawks with a short 2.5-inch barrel are called the Alaskan Super Redhawk and are primarily intended for self-defense against aggressive big game such as brown bears. The Alaska Model's shorter barrel means it can be holstered and fired much faster than models with longer barrels, but at the cost of lower bullet velocity and much more muzzle flash when the guns are discharged.
Ruger's Super Redhawk Alaskan: The Best Gun To Take Out A Bear?
All Super Redhawk revolvers only come in a brushed stainless finish, but original Redhawks can be blued or stainless.
The Super Redhawk is a large weapon and therefore very heavy. The Super Redhawk will weigh almost sixty ounces with a 9.5 inch barrel. Because of this heavy weight, the Super Redhawk is best carried on the chest in a holster. However, it can be carried on a belt holster like any other revolver
Ruger had many plans to drop the Redhawk and sell the Super Redhawk alone, but that didn't work out mainly because sales of the original Redhawk didn't take off. Some people prefer the classic lines of the original Redhawk, which is why it is still in production today.
However, there is no denying that the Super Redhawk is a much stronger gun than the original Redhawk and is one of the most durable hunting revolvers available on the market today.
Finally! My Ruger Alaskan Arrived Today.
Today, the Ruger Super Redhawk is available in a variety of calibers. The Super Redhawk's most popular caliber is .44 Magnum and was the pistol's original chambering when it was first introduced in 1987.
In 1997 Ruger introduced the Super Redhawk in the .454 Casull round. The Super Redhawk had the distinction of being the first .454 revolver of any type to hold six rounds, whereas previous .454 revolvers had only five rounds. The .454 Casull Super Redhawk can also fire .45 Long Colt cartridges, which are not as powerful but are also much more enjoyable to shoot because they have less recoil.
In 2003 Ruger introduced the Super Redhawk in .480 Ruger, which was a proprietary round developed by Ruger specifically for the Super Redhawk. The .480 Ruger is a hand-held hunting cartridge with less pressure than the .454, making it more enjoyable to shoot and still offering much more power than the .45 Long Colt or .44 Magnum cartridges. Production of the .480 Falcon was temporarily discontinued in 2007, but resumed shortly thereafter.
In 2018 Ruger introduced the Super Redhawk in 10mm auto. This Super Redhawk model has a 6.5 inch barrel and requires the use of moon clips to eject the cylinder cleanly. If 10mm rounds without moon clips are loaded into the cylinder, this must be done by hand (as with loading any type of semi-automatic pistol round into a revolver).

Are you looking for a hunting revolver that can take down North America's biggest and most dangerous big game?
If so, the Ruger Super Redhawk may be the gun you're looking for. While there are competing revolvers from companies like Bull and Smith & Wesson, there are simply no other large Magnum hunting revolvers on the market that can compete with the Super Redhawk for overall durability.
