S&w Csx Pistol - Smith & Wesson's new CSX is a micro 9mm made of aluminum that holds up to 13 rounds. Tyler Freel

The Smith & Wesson CSX is one of the latest 9mm pistols to hit the mainstream market, but it has some unique design features that will help it stand out. This is a brand new hammer action pistol with an aluminum frame and 13 round capacity. CSX is small and capable. This makes some significant differences in the designs of Smith & Wesson pistols such as the M&P series.

In today's firearms market, there is a competition for guns that aim to put more fire into smaller packages. Smith & Wesson had some decent competitors on the market with their Shield Plus model, but they took it a step further with the CSX.

On paper, the CSX isn't much smaller than the Shield Plus, but the new frame, magazines, and hammer design make it one of the best calibers on the market. The CSX is small, almost identical to the Kimber Micro 9 1911 and Springfield Armory's popular Hellcat. Smith & Wesson's website lists the CSX as 4.6 inches long, but the ones I've seen are 4.5 inches below the sight to the bottom of the magazine (with a 12-round magazine).

CSX is much more than an extension line. It is designed as a new small gun. It's clean ergonomics, cut corners, and low-key controls. It has aggressive but not quite cocking serrations on the front and rear of the slide, as well as slightly wider tabs on the rear. It includes an ultra-compact 10-round magazine as well as a slightly longer 12-round magazine.

The CSX is one of the smallest 9mm pistols on the market, and some key design features set it apart from most competitors. Most 9mm micro pistols on the market are polymer-framed, assault rifles, and for good reason. Polymer rifles are lightweight, durable, and inexpensive, and most assault pistols are reliable. Aside from external ergonomic and cosmetic differences, many 9mm micro pistols on the market are similar. CSX does not meet this standard

The CSX includes a remote control and an adjustable rear strap. The minimal back offers little feel but good grip.

The biggest break from the current competitor's kit is that the Smith & Wesson CSX is built in an aluminum frame with a durable writing panel on the front, and polymer link kits on the rear. The design of the panel is as fine and scratchy as 36 grit sandpaper.

Grip panels keep the aluminum frame comfortable and secure, even with sweaty hands. The pistol comes with an inflatable type backstrap, but you can easily replace it with the smaller backstrap included. The two straps on the back grip my hands well, making it comfortable to hold the pistol.

Aluminum is a softer metal than steel, but it works well for this pistol. After about 300 rounds of shooting, I didn't notice any noticeable or abnormal binding between the steel powder and the aluminum frame slide. Skeptics should note that most AR receivers are aluminum, and can withstand years of use and interaction with metal parts. With the CSX you get a compact and lightweight steel gun with an excellent grip.

The Smith & Wesson CSX differs from most popular 9mm pistols in another way: it's hammer. Both bolt-action and hammer-fired pistols are reliable, but being a hammer-fired pistol allows the CSX to have a tighter draw and a shorter trigger pull. The external hammer also allows the shooter to ride in the half-cock position if desired.

On closer inspection, the CSX is more compact than any other 9mm 1911 pistol. It would be a stretch to call it a variation of the 1911, but it shares the same key features as the 1911 in terms of barrel and pin ejection, longer rails, selector, and overall 1911-esque controls. The controls are all basic but easy to operate.

The Smith & Wesson CSX field gun is similar to a micro-1911, with a double stop lever. It uses a guide rod and self-locking spring, and the barrel and feed ramp are the same as the 1911. The CSX uses a large external trigger that you will see on most assault rifles, which helps with reliability.

The CSX pistol has self-healing stops on both the left and right sides, and while the pistol comes with a left-handed magazine, it can easily be swapped out for the included right-handed magazine. The CSX comes out of the box with both left and right thumb safeties.

The thumb safety has the same function and feel as the 1911, but is easier to operate because the lever safety point is located farther from the cockertail. This requires less effort than a short lever. I have very large hands and my thumb is beyond the safety lever. Some finger safes are very difficult to crack without breaking, but the CSX safe is easily broken by touching the side of the finger.

If you have large hands, the safety lever is behind your thumb. Fortunately, it's easy to stop. Tyler Freel

Another notable feature of the thumb safety is that it works regardless of whether the pistol is cocked or not, engaging the safety does not prevent the slide from moving. You can upload, download or check out the safe room in the "ON" position. You can also practice safety before you hammer. If you choose not to use the thumb safety feature at all, you'll barely notice it's there.

Compact and semi-automatic rifles have made a huge leap in shooting power in recent years. The first mini gun I ever bought - it was definitely a micro at the time - was a Kahr CW9. It was a sweet little shot from a 9mm pistol, but boy did it look clean and tough to control. The CSX shooting is a different story.

I don't have a CW9, but for comparison, I shoot the CSX along with my favorite micro-9mm, the Kimber Micro 9 Triary. The pistols are almost identical in size, with the CSX grip being thicker than the double magazine. The scope of the Kimber is easy to handle, and I find it smaller than other pistols like the Springfield Hellcat.

Although smaller, the CSX has nearly double the power of the top-of-the-line Kimber. Tyler Freel

I shot the CSX using the grip palm and minimal recoil, and it was a joy to shoot a pistol of its size. The scope is easy to control, and the sights never seem to fly off target during the retrieval cycle. I often refer to the Kimber Micro 9

, which means it has the smallest margin on target, but CSX did even better.

I call the CSX shooting opportunity a few things. First, these comfortable, textured glasses definitely help. Even with a 10-round magazine—which left no room for my red—my gun had no recoil or movement. Second, the gun is very long, which allows it to be held at close range. When you hit the humertail on the CSX, the top point is about 0.8 inches from the center of the nose. On my Kimber, you are about 1.25 inches from the center of the nose. The difference shown is obvious.

The recoil and good recoil control will make each one easy to shoot, but I was impressed with how well the Smith & Wesson CSX performed out of the box. With less mass, the CSX slide is likely to help with recovery. There is recoil, of course, but it feels like a compact .380 (like the LCP Max) in 9mm while holding the gun well.

The Smith & Wesson CSX has a medium weight but very clean trigger with almost no travel. I weighed my pull at 5 pounds 12 ounces. Many carry pistols and suffer long-term withdrawals, but not CSX. It has a small trigger-like safety device, and when squeezed, the trigger extends—almost fully retracted. The gun is small, so finger placement is important for accuracy, but it's a great trigger.

The only problem with the trigger is reset. Recovery is nice and short, audible and tangible, but it requires a conscious effort to recover after being fired. What I mean by this is that you can't reset your finger, you can force the tension of the trigger spring to reset your finger. You have to move consciously. Triggers
